Rafael Neff’s majestic photographs are influenced by the “desire of seeing”. As Professor Katrin Simons of Mainz University writes: “one secret of his works is certainly to be found in the extraordinary pleasure he takes in seeing. If there were a word that combined curiosity and looking, then this would be the concept that defines [his] nature.”
The artist himself writes:
“My principal is desire, aspiration. Also nostalgia…means the aspiration of the past; yearning….. means the aspiration for something.
In the beach series it is the desire of loneliness. In the opera series, it is the desire of a great performance. In the libraries it is the desire for knowledge.
My wish is astringency – even in the opulence of operas and libraries, there is astringency! At the end – everything is colour and form – thats it!”
